The book is written in contemporary style and understood in modern terms. The story of David is filled with issues which are relevant today: ambition, ethics, compromise, friendship.

The script is written on two planes of time. In the present, David, leader of Israel, and Nathan, his long time friend and political opponent, spend one day together from sunrise to sunset dealing with issues of power and politics. At the same time their discussions bring them back into the past where we experience the rise and fall and rise again of David as a young man. In this dream-like world of memory the past and present commingle. David and his younger self at times touch and converse but in reality this all takes place in the mind of David.
